Jill Scott, Janet Jackson and Tyler Perry star in Why Did I Get Married?
Romantic comedy Why Did I Get Married? has topped the US box office, with takings of $21.5m (£10.5m).
It pushed Disney comedy Game Plan into second place, and took more than George Clooney and Cate Blanchett's latest films combined.
Clooney's legal drama Michael Clayton climbed 19 places to three, tying with Joaquin Phoenix's We Own The Night.
Blanchett's Elizabeth: The Golden Age was at six with a "disappointing" $6.2m (£3m), film studio Universal said.
Why Did I Get Married? is an ensemble drama starring Tyler Perry, who also wrote and directed the film.
Focusing on the turbulent lives of four married couples, it features singers Janet Jackson and Jill Scott.
Perry previously topped the US box office with 2005's Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion in 2006.
The film's audience was audience was about 90% black and 65% female, according to Tom Ortenberg, president of distribution at film studio Lions Gate.
Michael Clayton expanded to play nationally in its second weekend, which explains its rapid rise up the box office charts.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age sees Blanchett play the Virgin Queen for a second time, after receiving an Oscar nomination for 1998's Elizabeth.
She reunited with director Shekar Kapur and actor Geoffrey Rush for the sequel, but critics have given the film a lukewarm reception.
Ben Stiller comedy The Heartbreak Kid fell three places to number five with $7.4m (£3.6m).
