The first runners-up in the national basketball championship, Mwanza Region team, has criticized the governing body, Tanzania Basketball Federation, for poor organisation of local tournaments.
The captain of the team, Mr.Kizito Bahati, said in Dar es Salaam on Friday that the daily per diem of Tsh.8.000/- for each player, meant for accommodation, tea, lunch and dinner was too little.
``Just imagine, how can you pay for hotel room and eat bearing in mind the high cost of living in Dar es Salaam?`` argued Mr.Kizito.
He said the players were forced to share beds and rooms to reduce expenses, but still each one ended up paying 7,000/-or more.
He advised TBF to bring in referees from abroad at all semi finals, to avoid the present claims of local referees favouring their teams.
However, the Secretary General of TBF,Lawrence Cheyo, admitted to have paid little money to the teams for the simple reason that their sponsors, TBL, gave them less than the amount originally promised. TBL was to provide 15m/= to them, but finally gave only 7.5 m/=.
The Champion of the competitions was Dar es Salaam who won by 100-79 points against Mwanza and were awarded a cup and cash money of 400.000/-. The first runners up, Mwanza were awarded 300.000/- only while second runners up, Zanzibar were awarded 200.000/-.
