Eritrea, Djibouti jet in tomorrow for Challenge Cup


Eritrea and Djibouti are expected to arrive in the country tomorrow to compete in the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup set to kick off on Saturday in Dar es Salaam and Arusha.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Secretary-General, Fredrick Mwakalebela, said yesterday other teams earmarked for the regional tourney would arrive on Thursday.

He said officials of the Council of the East and central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) would arrive in Dar es Salaam tomorrow to prepare for the body�s general elections which will be held on Friday.

He said all grounds which would be used to host the Cecafa tourney were in good condition- National Stadium in Dar es Salaam and Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.

He appealed to Arusha soccer fans to give Zanzibar Heroes enough support.

Zanzibar Heroes are placed in Group `C` together with Sudan and Ethiopia.

Groups A and B will be stationed in Dar es Salaam. Group `A` teams are Tanzania Mainland, Burundi, Kenya and Somalia while Group �B� has Rwanda, Uganda, Djibouti and Eritrea.

Hosts Kilimanjaro Stars will play Harambee Stars of Kenya in the opening match on Saturday at the National Stadium.

The winners of the tournament will be awarded 30,000 USD while first and second runners-up will be awarded 20,000 USD and 10,000 USD respectively.
