President Jakaya Kikwete lifts a bar of soap shortly after he inaugurated a new factory known as East Coast Oils and Fats Ltd owned by Mohamed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd in Dar es Salaam yesterday. Right is METL chairman Gulam Dewji.
President Jakaya Kikwete has challenged foreign investors to pay reasonable minimum wage packages for Tanzanians as they do to foreign experts.
``I want to see local Tanzanians who play an important role in realizing investors` objectives to be paid healthily, the same as the so-called foreign experts. This will make investors achieve what they are aspiring for,`` President Kikwete said.
Kikwete made the statement yesterday in Dar es Salaam when inaugurating the newly established East Coast Oils and Fats Ltd, which is under the umbrella of Mohamed Enterprises Company Ltd (MeTL) Group of Companies.
Paying reasonable wages to locals will improve working efficiency among them and their livelihoods, and make investors meet their targets.
"It will reduce unnecessary friction in working places, that in most cases deters the firms" objectives. I call upon investors not to differentiate pay packages between locals and foreigners," he said, adding: "There are many locals who perform even better than those foreigners."
He said the move would create harmonious relationship between workers and managements. "Such a move is crucial for the prosperity of the company as it will free it of sabotage."
