Breaking News: Car bomb explodes in north Spain

A car bomb has exploded near the centre of the Basque city of Bilbao in northern Spain, police say.
At least one person was injured, police and regional officials said.

The explosion occurred in the neighbourhood of la Pena de Bilbao, near the historic centre of the city, on Spain's northern coast.

It came days after police arrested the suspected leaders of banned Basque separatist party Batasuna. The party called the act a "declaration of war".

The bomb went off under the car of a bodyguard, who was injured, the Associated Press quoted a police official as saying.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais said the man acted as bodyguard to a socialist councillor.
