The Lions Club of Dar es Salaam has organised a free diabetes screening programme for the general public as part of marking the World Diabetes Day campaign.
A statement issued by the Chairman of the Club, Hyderali Gangji said the campaign aimed at raising awareness amongst the public on the rising prevalence of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents.
He said early diagnosis and education were crucial to reducing complications and saving lives.
Gangji said the theme of this year`s World Diabetes Day campaign was Diabetes in Children and Adolescents.
In many developing countries, children with diabetes suffered because insulin and other diabetes supplies were not affordable or even available sometimes.
`Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases. Today, more than 240 million people worldwide are living with diabetes,` he observed.
He said in 20 years to come, the number would rise to 380 million.
`Children are not spared from this global epidemic, with its debilitating and life-threatening complications,` Gangji said
The healthcare community, educators, parents and guardians must join forces to help children living with diabetes, prevent the condition in those at risk, and avoid unnecessary death and disability.
The free screening exercise is scheduled to take part from Monday through Wednesday at Abbas Medical Center in Dar es Salaam.
