Employees in both the public and private sectors, especially those in leadership positions, have been advised to promote the culture of voluntary retirement to give way to equally talented younger successors.
Former Tanzania Fertilizer Company (TFC) chief of finance and administration Simon Ng'umbi made the remarks in Dar es Salaam recently at a party organized by fellow workers to bid him farewell.
He likened leadership responsibilities to a relay marathon that required one to pass on a relay stick to allow a colleague push on for completion of the set distance.
`I am grateful that I served my country faithfully at TFC for seventeen years and requested to retire voluntarily, which was granted to me accordingly,` he said.
On his part, TFC general manager Salum Mkumba commended his predecessor for exemplary leadership that made it easy for him to catch up with standards.
`He painted a good name and built trust of the company that earned it credibility in various financial institutions. Well audited accounts of the company and good governance set high the credibility of the company,` explained Mkumba.
He said for many years TFC remained a major stakeholder in the agricultural sector such that efforts were made to ensure that farmers' demands for fertilizer were met to their convenience.
Ng`umbi received various presents in appreciation of his contribution to the well-being of the company.
They included 40 bags of cement, 50 corrugated iron sheets and a TV set.
On his part, TFC general supervisor Yohana Lukindo urged workers to emulate Ng`umbi`s dedication to work for the prosperity of the company.
