Mali's Diarra makes Caf shortlist

Diarra is one of five nominees

Mali's Mamadou Diarra is among the five nominees for this year's African Footballer of the Year award organised by Caf.

Diarra's international team-mate Freddie Kanoute and the Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba are also on the shortlist.

Togo's Emmanuel Adebayor and Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien complete the list.

According to Caf spokesman, Habuba Suleiman, the five nominees were chosen by the media and technical committee of the continental body.

Habuba said the list will be whittled down to three after a vote of the coaches of Africa's 53 national teams.

Drogba won the award last year.

The awards ceremony will be held in Lome, Togo, on 1 February 2008.
