New Central Committee chosen today

Bariadi Member of Parliament John Momose Cheyo (L) and Moshi Urban legislator Phillemon Ndessmburo communicate by mobile phone during recess at the Parliament grounds in Dodoma yesterday.

The CCM secretary general will be known today after the National Executive Committee meets here in a closed door meeting to elect members of the Central Committee.

Party Chairman President Kikwete announced yesterday that NEC members will meet this morning at the party headquarters.

The just elected NEC members will choose 14 central committee members out of 30 names presented by the party chairman from among members of the National Executive Committee.

According to the CCM constitution, the secretary general, his two deputies and departmental heads are elected by the National Executive Committee from among the NEC members.

The party chairman will nominate one name for each post and present them to the NEC for endorsement.

It is not known who may succeed Yusuf Makamba, although chances remain that may retain the post.

The defunct Central Committee comprised Chairman Kikwete, former vice chairmen John Malecela and Amani Abeid Abeid Karume, Vice President Dr Mohamed Shein, deputy secretary general Jaka Mwambi, secretary general Yusuf Makamba, Salehe Ramadhan Feruzi, Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, former president Benjamin Mkapa, Rashid Kawawa and former Zanzibar president Dr Salmin Amour.

Others were Zanzibar Chief Minister Shamsi Vuai Nahodha, Speaker of the National Assembly Samwel Sitta, party publicity secretary Aggrey Mwanri, Kidawa Hamid Salehe, Rostam Aziz, Speaker of the House of Representatives Pandu Kificho, Dr Gharib Bilal, Abiud Maregesi, Anna Abdallah, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi and Amina Salum Ali.

Others were Kingunge Ngombale-Mwiru, Zakia Meghji, Ali Ameir Mohammed, Pindi Chana, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, Haji Omar Heri, Anna Makinda, Abdulrahman Kinana, Samia Suluhu Hasan, Abdallah Kigoda, Dr Asha Rose Migiro, Yusuf Mohamed Yusuf, Dr Maua Daftari and Mohammed Seif Khatib.

Meanwhile, CCM Chairman Jakaya Kikwete has called on party members not to spoil the harmonious atmosphere created by the just ended national congress.

`This meeting has completely changed the direction of the party. There is calmness. As we leave this conference room, let us not spoil this atmosphere,` Kikwete said when giving his vote of thanks to the delegates.

Although Kikwete did not clarify further, political analysts believe that he was referring to factions within the party that had threatened to divide it.

He called on CCM members to start preparations for the 2010 general election saying: `Ours is a political party not a football club. Our main objective is to win elections and form the government.`
