AfDB extends 70bn/- for Lake Region agriculture project


The African development Bank (AfDB) has provided the government a loan 69.8bn/- to facilitate investment project in the agricultural sector in the districts around Lake Victoria.

The release of the funds makes implementation of the project to use a total of 94.6bn/- from other sources including farmers and the government.

The project which will benefit five Lake Victoria zone regions has been supported by a subsidy.

The coordinator of Agricultural Sector Development Programme, Jovin Kangimba, made the remarks in Bukoba, Kagera Region yesterday when presenting a report on the implementation of the project for the year 2006/07 at a workshop.

Kangimba said while the AfDB had donated such amount of funds, the government of Tanzania would contribute 10.8bn/- as subsidy and farmers a total of 13.6bn/- in the project which started in 2006.

He clarified that 96 per cent of the donated funds would be sent to targeted people to strengthen issues of training and investments in agriculture and strengthening monetary institutions and markets in the villages in accordance with their budgets.

He said the remaining 4 per cent would be used for coordination purposes of the project.

Kangimba said 28 districts from five regions making Lake Victoria zone would benefit with the funds.

The regions where the 28 districts are located include Mara, Kagera, Mwanza, Shinyanga and Kigoma.

About 250,000 farmers would benefit from the project through 10,000 farmers� associations in 750 villages.
