Five top police commanders left for New Orleans, USA, on Tuesday to train in modern ways of fighting high-tech crime under the sponsorship of the Tanzania Cigarette Company, (TCC).
Under the sponsorship, the cigarette company had spent 90m/- to cover for airfare, meals, accommodation, insurance as well as conference fees for the officials two-week stay in the US.
Handing over the donation to the departing officials at a function held at the police head office over the weekend, TCC director of corporate affairs Paul Makanza said his company`s assistance was geared to helping the force execute its duty of securing peoples life and property better.
``We all know that without stability, peace and tranquility in any country, which is the responsibility of the police, the business environment and businesses will be unsafe,`` he noted.
He said the TCC management believed that the police force was their partners in business, which was why they did not hesitate to offer various forms of assistance including last year`s contribution of 43m/- extended to the force to support their efforts in fighting a crime wave that was then rising.
``We can attest today that your efforts last year won accolades of many Tanzanians including us at TCC. We hope this year`s assistance will further hone your officials to become more knowledgeable and skillful ones,`` he noted.
He confided that TCC would be more than willing to assist the police in times of need so far as lowering of the crime rate was concerned.
On his part, director of finance and administration Commissioner Clodwig Mtweve thanked TCC for the donation, noting that the company had always been generous to the police force.
``I urge more business firms to emulate TCC`s spirit of generosity, because the job of fighting crime is for all Tanzanians, businesspeople included,`` noted Mtweve, who is among the departing officials.
Mtweve said in the year 2001, TCC for the first time financed the forces trip to the US by contributing 41m/- to enable five officials attend training there.
``From that year, TCC has continued to sponsor our trips to the US for training courses conducted at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conferences every year,`` he noted.
Other police officials who are to attend the training are Commander of the Dar es Salaam Special Zone, Commissioner Alfred Tibaigana, and assistant commissioners of police Lucas Kusima, Adrian Magayane and Albert Nyamuhanga.
