The Tanzania Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO) has urged the government to increase subsidy in agriculture to enable the sector play a greater role in addressing poverty levels in the country.
TANGO coordinator Ngunga Tepani said last Thursday that the agricultural sector played an enormous role in the country`s economic development as it employed more than eighty per cent of Tanzanias population, hence it needed more subsidy.
``Currently agriculture contributes about 50 per cent to the national economy, and therefore needs more support from the government,`` he said.
``Practical actions are needed towards an agricultural revolution to enable people to move away from the poverty line, Tepani told reporters.
The coordinator said Tanzanians would join other people in the world event beginning tomorrow to stand up and speak out against poverty in order to improve their economic well-being.
``Stand up, Speak Out against Poverty campaign
is a great day to most people to share their experiences on poverty-related problems,`` he added.
The festival would give people the chance to air their views on how they have suffered from poverty-related issues and perhaps come up with remedial measures to scale down poverty levels.
