Ruthless Johanneson retains title

Johanneson lost a European title bid against Kirakosyan in July

Carl Johanneson retained his British super-featherweight title in a savage brawl with Michael Gomez at the Doncaster Dome.

The Leeds man floored his opponent with a big right hand in round six, although Gomez did manage to get to his feet.

But Johanneson continued to pile on the pressure and with Gomez unsteady on his feet, referee Micky Vann wisely stepped in to end the contest.

Gomez said: "It was a ridiculous stoppage. I was perfectly alright."

It was a huge win for Johanneson, who got his career back on track after his shock loss to Leva Kirakosyan three months ago.

Next up could be another domestic title defence against his mandatory challenger Kevin Mitchell, the highly rated and unbeaten Londoner.

But Johanneson's promoter and trainer Frank Maloney said: "We'll sit down and see where we go from here.

"Mitchell is next in line, but after watching Carl's performance here he might not be interested."
