Police halt illegal Yanga meeting

Police yesterday dispersed Yanga members who assembled at the club house in Dar es Salaam for a meeting.

The so called members` meeting was aimed at suspending some of the club`s executive committee members.

Those who were targeted to be suspended were Chairman Iman Omar Madega, Abeid Mohamed Abeid (treasurer) and Francis Lucas (publicity secretary).

The meeting hit the snag when the police told them that the club`s constitution was not allowing members to call a meeting.

Yanga constitution says that only the chairman is entitled to call a club`s meeting.

The police also noticed that those who called the meeting had no agenda to discuss, apart from causing chaos.

Members claimed that they wanted to suspend the officials because they had failed to amend the constitution.

A controversial Yanga member Yusuf Mzimba told members who thronged at the Jangwani Street house that police had stopped the meeting after realizing that they had no agenda and would have instead caused mayhem.

He claimed that the police had advised them to organise another meeting which will not go against the constitution.

Madega on Saturday asked the police to stop the meeting because it was unconstitutional.
