Nigeria held in Mexico

Obafemi Martins scored twice

Nigeria squandered a two-goal lead and missed a late penalty in a 2-2 friendly draw in Mexico on Sunday.

Obafemi Martins scored twice to put the Super Eagles on top but Juan Carlos Cacho notched a brace as Mexico hit back.

Substitute Ikechukwu Uche then wasted a glorious opportunity when he fired a penalty over the crossbar.

Martins nearly put Nigeria ahead in the 25th minute when he forced a fine save from Guillermo Ochoa but made no mistake seven minutes later when he scored with a left-foot shot into the far corner.

In the 52nd minute, Martins increased Nigeria's lead when he broke clear down the left and scored with another left-foot drive.

Cacho pulled one back three minutes later when he headed in Israel Castro's cross and equalised from a penalty in the 68th minute, sending Dele Aiyenugba the wrong way following a foul by Taye Taiwo on Giovani dos Santos.

Nigeria could have won the game in the last minute when Carlos Salcido fouled an opponent in the penalty area but Uche sent his effort over the crossbar.
