The government has spent up a total of 253.3m/- to assist people affected by floods and other disasters in 2006 and this year.
The Prime Minister Edward Lowassa, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Tanzania is among countries in the world that experience disasters like drought, floods, earthquakes, tsunami, fire, diseases and road and even industrial accidents.
Lowasa said this in a speech on the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, which was read on his behalf by the State minister Batilda Burian that major disasters the country faced include floods.
Towards the end of last year and at the beginning of 2007, heavy rains caused floods in Mtwara, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Tabora, Dodoma, Singida, Iringa and Manyara regions.
The PM said those floods caused considerable damage to economic infrastructures, crops as well as human settlements.
