Government rescues boxers departing for US on Oct 19

The Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) has finally announced that it will send its team in the World Amateur Boxing Championships to be held in Chicago, USA, from October 20 to November 3.

BFT Secretary-General Gaston Mlay told reporters yesterday that the team would leave for Chicago on October 19.

`I want to assure Tanzanians that our team will compete in the Chicago bouts. The government through the Ministry for Information, Culture and Sports, has promised us that the boxers will go to the US,` Mlay said.

`We don`t know the number of boxers who will go, but the number will depend on the government support,` he added.

`Although the government has assured us about the trip we still appeal for other people to support our team so that we can send all boxers who are in the camp to Chicago,` Mlay added.

Thirteen boxers are currently in an off training at the JKT Mgulani in Dar es Salaam under coaches Benjamin Mwangata and Nassoro Michael.

They are Ally Kimwaga, Emillian Patrick, Petro Mtagwa, Joseph Martine, Muhsin Mohamed, Hashim Simon, Rajabu Omary, Mohamed Rashid, Mrisho Adam, Leonard Machichi, Lusajo Mwaipopo (light) and Amosi Godwin.

The championships, serving as the Olympic qualifiers, have attracted over 1,000 boxers from 102 countries. 35 African countries have registered to compete.
