The Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Ludovick Mwananzila has said the government has set aside 1.1bn/- for teacher`s training for the fiscal year 2007/ 2008 in a move to produce 12,000 graduates.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Mwananzila said the government would also provide teaching facilities worth 9.14bn/- to help improve teaching and the learning environment.
He further said that the government with the support of African Development Bank (AfDB) would increase laboratories in all schools around the country.
He however admitted that, some secondary schools still lacked teaching facilities and conducive learning environment.
Mwananzila said this on behalf of the Minister for Education and Vocational Training in his response to a question asked by Martha Umbulla (Special Seats, CCM) who had wanted to know whether it was fair for schools with facilities to sit for similar exams with students in schools which did not have the required facilities.
Responding to the question the Deputy Minister said: ``I agree with the honourable MP that some secondary schools have no enough teaching facilities.
The government has put priority on construction of houses for teachers in a project that is to cost 13.5bn/-.``
He said: ?Honourable Speaker, in making sure that quality education is given to Tanzanians; important matters which are needed include having enough teachers, classrooms, teachers? houses, teaching and learning equipment and laboratories?.
He said that the government had set up strategic plans to ensure that Tanzanians got quality education.
Among the plans included expanding teachers colleges in the level of degree courses offers, to change the Dar es Salaam Teachers? College and Mkwawa Secondary School to be associated with universities of education.
He said more colleges would be established in the country to produce more teachers in order to meet the requirement.
He said in 2008 about 12,000 teachers would graduate in diploma and degree levels.
