Moshi Police College introduces new programme

Inspector General of Police, Mr Said Mwema

GRADUANDS of basic police training at Moshi Police College (CCP), will now undergo a nine-month internship programme, which will be conducted on rotational basis, Inspector General of Police, Mr Said Mwema, announced here on Friday.

Addressing a CCP graduation assembly, he said the programme will be closely supervised by CCP Commandant, tutors and respective Regional Police Commanders.

He said the programme was intended to assess how effectively the interns practice on the ground the theories they have learnt during the course work to rejuvenate the force in the wake of challenges posed by transnational organised crimes.

In his address, the guest of honour, the Minister for Public Safety and Security, Mr Bakari Mwapachu, directed the IGP to take stern disciplinary measures against police officials who behave unethically.

''The measures should include summary dismissal from the force,'' he stressed, adding that unless peoples' confidence in the police force was restored, efforts to combat crimes will be undermined.

The Minister said that although the police force has succeeded in minimising incidents of organised crimes, such as banditry, drug trafficking and money laundering, it has to re-organise itself to fight sophisticated transnational crimes which were sometimes difficult to detect.

He said to face the challenge, the force has to be of the highest integrity, directing the IGP to conduct a thorough house cleaning exercise to ensure that the force retain highly disciplined police officials.

Meanwhile, the CCP Commandant, Mr Josiah Mwesiga, told the Minister that of the 1,882 candidates who sat for their final examinations, 1,855 passed the test while 27 could not make it.

The IGP ordered the 27 failures to undergo a two-week supplementary training to determine their fate as that will be their last chance.
